MY TECHNOLOGY SEMINAR ON THE TOPIC : MULTI MEDIA AND MULTI- SENSORY APPROACH

MY TECHNOLOGY SEMINAR ON THE TOPIC :
MULTI MEDIA AND MULTI- SENSORY APPROACH

INTRODUCTION
This seminar on Multimedia Approach and Multi-sensory Approach focuses on the detailed explanation of multimedia approach, what is multimedia, the educational values of multimedia approach, instructional development of multimedia, its advantages and disadvantages, role of the teachers in the approach. The second half of the seminar deals with multi sensory approach, what is multi sensory approach, the various multi-sensory techniques that could be used to assist a student in learning etc. The content of the seminar concludes with the key benefits of this approach. In order to collect data for this seminar I had referred to the books, Trends and Developments in Modern Educational Practices (Dr. K. Sivarajan), Foundations of Educational Technology (SK Mandal), Educational Technology (Prof A Antony),Advanced Educational Technology ( Ramnath Sharma, S.S Chandra) Introduction to Educational Technology ( K Sampath, A Panneer Selvam,S. Santhanam).
MULTI MEDIA APPROACH
There are many modes of instruction, which require use of several media- audio, visual and audio-visual. The learning experiences provided through such media can be designated as mediated experiences. Its use would make certain types of learning tasks easier. Appropriate use of different media would enable a teacher to transact a variety of learning experiences. It is therefore, considered that appropriate media selection is an appropriate part of instructional design and its delivery. Use of a single medium cannot fulfill all the requirements of developmental education. Hence, the use of various media has to be judiciously combined. Although one of the media could be the “master medium”, other media also should be used so that the quality of presentation becomes maximally effective, resulting in totality of development. When we integrate more than one medium in teaching, we call it “media mix” or the multimedia approach. But, due to the advancement of technology, the teacher may not be required to take separately the help of a number of media while imparting instruction. A single multimedia instructional device developed using modern technological knowledge can reflect features of more than one medium. Such a device will be more effective and more economical.
Multimedia
“A picture is worth thousand words; full motion video embedded in documents is worth even more”. Multimedia has been used as the medium in revolutionizing education. Multimedia is combination of different elements- texts, graphics, animations, simulations and sound. It is used to form informative and interactive learning environment. It can be used effectively to enhance self-learning.
They use more than one medium to convey information. TV uses sound and pictures. Such media which make use of more than one media to convey information are called Multimedia. It is very effective and dynamic environment for the teaching and learning process. With multimedia a wide variety of media options can be packed together to make learning exciting, efficient, and effective
The Educational Values of the Multimedia Approach
1.      Multimedia approach can convey vast information and can provide many sources from which students can get access to the information.
2.      Through multimedia approach a large number of learning can be practiced over a great range of content.
3.      Multimedia approach is not restricted to a single type of learning style or instructional mode. It can provide the support of a wide range of activities.
4.      Multimedia approach provides the opportunity to gain mastery of competencies and skills which are based on theoretical knowledge.
5.      Multimedia approach uses different media at the same time, which will enable the learner to get access to information in a dynamic environment.
Instructional Development of Multimedia
a)      Planning: - By a committee of teachers and representatives from various participating group of students.
b)      Formulations of broad objectives.
c)      Selection of learning materials! An examination and evaluation of all available bibliography of media learning material will indicate those relevant do the realization of the objectives.
d)     Selection of teaching methods and strategies: Deciding which of these objectives could be reached effectively by various teaching mode, as large group/ small group talks and discursions, individual work, use of the different media selected, visits by pupils to places of importance, visitors from the community projects etc.
e)     Evaluation of the completed learning, with reference to the reporting of individual and groups.
Advantages of the multimedia Approach
1.      This approach can arouse curiosity among the learners and provide them vivid impression.
2.    It can develop a positive attitude among the learners towards the teaching-learning process
3.    Technique of simulation can be effectively applied through the multimedia approach.
4.    Teacher can supplement regular teaching with the multimedia approach, which will help the                teacher in reinforcing the learning process.
5. Effective remediation programs can be implemented through the multimedia approach.
Disadvantages
1.      It requires highly sophisticated infrastructure facilities, which may lead to heavy financial burden
2.      Expertise and skills are required to operate the multimedia devices, which will lead to the problem of non-availability of human resources.
3.      Multimedia approach in not feasible in the case of all topics of study
Role of the teacher
1.      Lecture or chalk and talk method will not suffice. The teacher has to learn and adopt a number of methods and techniques like questions-answer, demonstrating, problem solving, analytic-synthetic, assignment depending upon the demands of the teaching-learning situation.
2.      Teacher has to learn the use and application of different media select and utilize them in proper combination for the attainment of teaching-learning objectives in a particular instructional situation. He has to gain mastery over the use of different audio-visual aids, software material and hardware equipment etc.
3.      This approach aims at the creation of such teaching-learning environment that may prove helpful in making students learning an independent and individualized activity. The teacher has to make his students active participants in the process of learning instead of remaining passive.
4.      The teacher on one hand has to lead his students for independent individualized learning with the use of television lessons, audio video cassettes, recorded and printed programmed material, teaching machines and computer assisted instruction etc. On the other hand, he has to make their learning a living and cooperative process by resorting to the group activities like seminar, symposium, panel discussion, workshops and interacting with the people in real work situation.
5.      The teacher has to play a very constructive role in making his students learn the things in a quite practical way by going through concrete and living experiences. The teacher must himself know the application and use of the facts and principles learnt theoretically in any curricular area.

Multi-Sensory Approach
It refers to the way information is delivered to the student. The three primary modes of instruction are visual, auditory, and sensory-motor. Visual instruction includes activities like reading a text or looking at a picture. Auditory instruction might involve listening to a lecture or a book on tape. A third mode of instruction is sensory-motor. This is often referred to as a “hands on” approach. Multi-sensory approach, also known as VAKT (Visual-auditory-kinesthetic-tactile) implies that students learn best when information is presented in different modalities. Multi sensory techniques are frequently used for children with learning differences. Students with learning difficulties typically have difficulties in one or more areas of reading, spelling, writing, math, listening comprehension and expressive language. Multi sensory techniques enable students to use their personal areas of strength to help them learn. They can range from simple to complex, depending on the needs of the student and the task at hand.
Multisensory techniques which could be used to assist a student in learning:-
1.      To stimulate visual reasoning and learning:-
a.    Text and/ or pictures on paper, posters, models, projection screens, computers or flash cards.
b.    Use of colors for highlighting, organizing information or imagery.
c.    Graphic organizers, outlining passages.
d.    Student created art, images, text, pictures and videos.
2.      Auditory Techniques:-
a.       Peer assisted reading, paired reading, computerized text readers, books on tape, etc.
b.      Video or film with accompanying audio.
c.       Music, song, instruments, speaking, rhymes, chants and language games.
3.      Tactile Teaching Methods:-
Multisensory techniques that involve using the sense of touch are called tactile methods.
Tactile methods include strategies such as:-
a.       Sand trays, textured objects, finger paints and puzzles, etc.
b.      Modeling materials such as clay and sculpting materials.
c.       Using small materials called manipulative to represent number values to teach math skills.
4.      Kinesthetic Method:-
a.       Multi-sensory methods using body movements are called kinesthetic methods. These involve fine and gross motor movements.
b.      Games involving jumping rope, clapping or other movements paired with activities while counting and singing songs related to concepts.
c.       Any large movement activity for students involving dancing, bean bag tossing or other activities involving concepts, rhythmic recall and academic competition such as quizzes, flash card races and other learning process.
Key Benefits of the Multisensory Approach are:-
1.      Increased learner engagement.
2.      Generating a greater capacity for learning
3.      Encouraging a greater knowledge transfer
4.      Improved attitudes towards learning.
5.      Greater student achievement
CONCLUSION
Thus, as explained in the seminar, the Multimedia approach & Multi sensory approach plays an important role in the teaching-learning process. The use of the multimedia approach makes teaching easier and technological. The teachers come to know the basic technologies at hand and they have to be up to date and should thoroughly have the content knowledge, which with the help of the multimedia approach can be best delivered to the learners, thus making the learners curious for learning and making the classes interesting.  The multi-sensory approaches uses the senses to understand the knowledge rendered by the teachers through visual, auditory, kinesthetic and tactile multi-sensory techniques, which helps the better understanding of the contents being teached by the teacher to the students.
